It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—

With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
3 ~9 u3 P; w( |1 U6 M) EAnd mouth with myriad subtleties. h+ ?1 w- h# ^3 O( ?1 }
$ Y Y" _0 r e4 d9 ~! ^2 iWhy should the world be over-wise,5 d$ h- K1 H: ?* A5 R) Z
In counting all our tears and sighs?3 E) t2 w+ B- U5 E5 U
Nay, let them only see us, while' C9 k* }( H) Q5 o* |$ [
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries( Q+ P# y. Z# W1 O
To thee from tortured souls arise.

Beneath our feet, and long the mile;: e, i3 ^5 H* T" D. {5 U
