This debt we pay to human guile;
8 \1 z" t3 e! _5 [; cWith torn and bleeding hearts we smile,) J8 \: ~8 _! w2 M
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,% ~: ~8 M0 @9 q9 N
In counting all our tears and sighs?
4 o/ N6 W6 U+ w- f0 x1 @Nay, let them only see us, while) O [$ F. q+ r0 J C6 q8 A
We wear the mask.+ J0 k" C2 Q% Y- x# w! Y9 l
; H6 S- i. Z! |& B
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries) Z6 y" u& w: V6 U$ F, ]. |7 Z! G
To thee from tortured souls arise.6 }$ o% F, n' Z$ S) }5 c( c' o
We sing, but oh the clay is vile; ^8 m7 k0 i W% K8 L
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;- C# V- ]" f1 O; ~6 D
