PhD Position: Design of pixelated detectors for soft x-rays and fast timing application in astroparticle and particle physics

Job description:         The emerging HV-CMOS technology opens ample opportunities for improving the performance of high-resolution position-sensitive detectors for a number of applications. HV-CMOS technology allows to process silicon detector using standard CMOS microelectronics methods, but with the possibility to apply high bias voltages on high-resistivity substrates. This permits to obtain deep depletion of the HV-CMOS sensors that allows increased speed of operation and sensitivity in the full sensor volume. Experimental particle physics and astrophysics can substantially benefit from this novel sensor-type, and so would other applications in other fields of science and technology (e.g. medical imaging, industrial tomography etc). The doctoral candidate (f/m) will work on the design of special sensors primarily intended for photon and charged particle detection for physics experiments.

There is also the possibility to cooperate with the university of Liverpool. In this case the candidate would be enrolled at the university of Liverpool as a doctoral student and spend at least half of the time at IPE.

Qualification:         We expect a master degree/diploma in Physics or Electrical Engineering and strong interest in research.
In addition a high degree of commitment and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team are expected. Previous experience in ASIC design is a plus but not required.  
Salary:         Remuneration shall be based on the Collective Agreement for the Public Service Sector.
