An introduction to stitching cards
Description
A beautiful card made by stitching the dragonfly design directly on the card. The dark blue card is 104mm x 152mm. It is stitched with pearl metallic thread. This design takes approximately one hour to stitch.

Method
Step One: Protect your work surface with a piece of foam, a felt mat or a folded towel. Open up the card and with the right side facing up, lay a design template on the middle section.

Step Two: Holding the template in place, take the large pin and prick through each dot in turn on the template making sure that the pin also goes through the card. Remove the template when the entire design has been completed.

Hint - If you wish to secure your template to the card with sticky tape, place the tape on and off a cloth several times. This will take off the excess stickiness yet still allow it to adhere to the card without leaving a mark. To test first use the reverse of the right panel as this will eventually be hidden.

Step three: Cut a length of thread about 2 feet long and thread the needle. (It is better to use several short threads rather than one long piece as the holes of the card may start to wear away the filament in the thread and cause it to fray. The underside of your work will be hidden so it does not matter how many times you seal your threads.) Attach the thread to the back of the card, close to the starting point, with a small piece of sticky tape, making sure that you do not cover over any holes.

Step Four: Follow instructions for each embroidered design, securing each length of thread with a small piece of sticky tape.

The first wing is complete. Notice how the metallic thread catches the light giving these cards their special quality.

Step Five: When a design is completed fold under the right hand side of the card and glue in place around the edge.

Mola cutting

Mola is a traditional way of using fabric in layers to produce attractive patterns. The layers would be stitched through and then patterns cut through the layers.

The Mola technique has now been adapted to make beautiful greetings cards. A number of templates have been produced to cut the shapes. These can be used with attractively patterned Han-Ji paper to give the appearance of richly patterned fabric.

The templates can be used in many different ways. We give a simple example here to explain the basic technique. Further information can be gained from the book Mola cutting for Greetings Cards by Erica Pels.

At front left to right: Mola cutting template, Dark blue single fold card, sheets of decorative paper. At the top: propelling pencil, metal ruler, craft knife.
Step one:
Open your greetings card and lay it face down on your work surface. Use a propelling pencil to mark the centre of your card on the inside of the front.

Step two:
Tape the Mola template in position. Draw the lines of the template on your card in pencil.

Remove the template. Use a craft knife and cutting mat to cut the design from the card. If it has straight edges you can use a metal ruler to cut the lines. Some templates have curved designs and these will be cut freehand.

Take a sheet of patterned paper and draw a square on the back. Use the Mola template to get the correct size

Cut out the square.

Turn the patterned paper to its right side and run a narrow line of adhesive around all four edges.

Mount the decorative paper over the cut-out design on the inside of the greetings card, patterned side down.

Cut out the required sections of the patterned paper. Leave a strip of patterned paper about 1mm wide on all sides. Some chosen shapes are not cut out at this stage.

The chosen sections cut out leaving a 1mm border.

Cut a second square of patterned paper

Mount this on the inside front of the greetings card on top of the first square of patterned paper.

tea bag folding

Tea bag folding uses some of the techniques of Origami combined with tiny squares of patterned paper. Once folded these squares are combined in attractive geometric patterns to form a larger design.

The art of tea bag folding is said to have been born when a clever Dutch crafter decided to work with the decorative envelopes used to hold fruit tea bags. As the craft developed specially printed sheets have been produced with patterned squares ready to cut out and fold.

Any patterned paper could be used but part of the attraction of the assembled tea bag patterns is the repetition of the design elements.

Folding the paper.

On the diagram the green shaded areas represent the right side of the paper, the white areas the wrong side of the paper.

The dotted lines represent folds you are about to make, the solid lines represent folds you have already made.
Step 1.

In step 1 and 2 you are creating creases by folding and unfolding.
1. Fold the paper into half and then unfold it. Fold in half the other way and unfold it

2. Turn the paper over and fold from corner to corner then unfold it. Fold the other two corners together then unfold it.

3. Fold the lower half up and the outer edges into the centre, manipulating the creased paper into shape 4.

Fold a total of eight shapes to this stage.

5. Slide a second folded sheet between the V of the first shape. Note the way the V's of each piece go together.
Fix the pieces with paper adhesive as you assemble the shape. If this is your first try it might be best to assemble it dry to start with, then fix it with adhesive when you are satisfied you have the correct method.

6. Continue sliding new pieces into the V of the previous piece until the design is complete.
The last piece of the set will take a bit of manipulation to get it into the correct position. Study the finished diagram to see how it should look.

Mount the finished design on the front of your greetings card.
