There are reasons for the slower economical development for Uighur in Xinjiang:
8 C/ d+ Y  A6 e7 y1. Most of them live in more remote southern Xinjiang (see the map). China can only built railways to there in recent years.
) t$ A: ]* g4 }# T0 z2. China tries to keep their culture. They don't speak good Chinese. This makes them difficult in business.
3. Market economy put Uighur in worse situation. Before the reform, China had quota system that gave jobs in state-owned companies to Uighurs. But state-owned business in decreasing fast in China.
4. Xinjiang is not a Uighur only province. Some minorities even have a small population, but they have big lands there. Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture (Hui people, 73,660 km2), Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture (mongonian, 24,934 km2), Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture (Mongonian again, 470,954km2), Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture(Kirgiz, 72,468 Km2), Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture(Kazakh, 56,381 km2), Altay Prefecture (Kazakh again, 117,699 km2). Han people dominate in northern Xinjiang in history. So, Xinjiang is not only Uighurs' land, but also many moinorities and han people's home.

Many Americans know General Tso's chicken. But I never know we had this name in China. General Tso or Zuo Zongtang was a famous Chinese general in late Qing dynasty when China was at weakest point in history. He fought for part of Xinjiang from Russia after China lost it for 11 years. During KMT era, Xinjiang was also in China.
