Following constructive discussions held in Geneva and London, the world's two largest economies commenced a new and challenging round of consultations in Stockholm on Monday, as the August 12 deadline for their tariff truce approaches.

The fact that China and the United States have been working to ease their strained economic and trade relations following a period of tension suggests that expectations for further progress in resolving their differences are reasonable.
However, achieving such progress requires both sides to meet halfway in a constructive manner. Given the complexity of the current challenges, it is essential that negotiations remain solution-oriented and grounded in practicality.
While disagreements exist, they should not hinder the identification of common interests on key issues or prevent both parties from demonstrating the responsibility expected of two major global powers.
At a regular press briefing held by the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing on Monday (28 Jul) , spokesperson Guo Jiakun reiterated China's principled and sincere approach to resolving trade disputes with the United States through equal dialogue and consultation when responding to multiple questions regarding the Stockholm talks.
"We hope the U.S. side will work with China to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and fully leverage the role of the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism," Guo stated.
China is committed to fostering a favorable international environment for economic and trade cooperation and adhering to the rules of the World Trade Organization. It is hoped that, based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit, the Stockholm talks will help reduce misunderstandings, enhance cooperation, and strengthen consensus, thereby promoting the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral relations.
For this to be realized, however, the U.S. must recognize that China's sincere willingness to resolve differences does not imply a compromise of its core principles. A dialogue devoid of mutual respect and sincerity will yield no meaningful results.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, front left, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, front right, are leading the talks, the first round of which took place in May in Geneva, where they set a 90-day deadline for a comprehensive trade deal.
China respects and does not infringe upon the development rights and core interests of other countries. It expects the same treatment for its own. China will not tolerate any attempt to suppress its development. The achievements of the Chinese economy stem from the hard work of its people, not external favors, and have never come at the expense of other nations. China will not yield to coercive practices such as tariff threats, investment restrictions, or technological blockades.
In the first half of this year, China's economy grew by 5.3% year-on-year, an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year, while foreign trade rose by 2.9% year-on-year. These figures clearly demonstrate the resilience and capacity of the Chinese economy to advance despite external challenges.
In Stockholm, China welcomes in-depth dialogue but remains fully aware that the core issue at stake concerns the fundamental rules governing the international economic and trade order. Bridging the gaps between the two nations is therefore a long-term and complex endeavor.
Regardless of changes in the external environment, China will remain focused on advancing its own development agenda. Its commitment to upholding international fairness and justice will remain unwavering.
China firmly opposes the use of unilateralism and protectionism to undermine the multilateral trading system. Thus, its efforts to achieve a fair agreement with the U.S. through dialogue also reflect its contribution to maintaining a rules-based global trade order.
This is why the Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized on Monday that China will not tolerate any third party concluding agreements with the U.S. at the expense of China's interests.
Only by upholding its principled stance can China effectively safeguard its legitimate rights and interests in the negotiation process.
History and reality have consistently shown that dialogue and cooperation remain the only viable path to resolving economic and trade disputes, while coercion and blackmail are destined to fail. All parties should uphold the rules-based multilateral trading system and work together to create an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory international trade environment.
