Stupid Or not?
─Film Review on Forrest Gump
The director of the film adopts a new angle that the remarkable film begins with a reverse narration. Sitting in a bench at a bus station, Forrest Gump told of his reminiscence over the past: his true love for Jenny life-long and his painful experience in Vietnam War. Note that the hero Gump is semi-stupid and only has very low IQ, but astonishingly he luckily becomes a football star, a war-hero and a millionare. What a man can expect in his life--both honor and fortune--he gets, seemingly effortlessly.
It is an impact to those who burn with ambition, Gump doesn't deliberately pursue honor or fortune (he even doesn't know what's the value of that), but he gets everything. He doesn't know how to please a woman, but Jenny is moved by his sincere love. All those mentioned above are funny enough. But keep in mind that all those reflects an old Chinese proverb: Good man will have good repay. Gump becomes a football star because he recovered his physical disability and didn't care of other's mock. Gump got White House honor because of his bravery to rescue his comrade-in-arms. Gump becomes a shrimp tycoon not because he has such an ambition to make money, but he keeps the promise with Babba Blue. He desperately saved Lt.Dan Taylor but never wants his gratitude, as he thinks it's his duty to rescue all his comrades. He gains Jenny's love at last because he didn't care of Jenny's demoralization at a time.
In my opinion, all that Gump has unconsciously done will be rewarded. And that reward is: honor, fortune and love. I appreciate Gump's philosophy of life.
Gump's experience is typical of an American legend. That is, an 'idiot' becomes upstart over night with less effort. I think the film is so acclaimed in America mainly because of its theme─Don't care about the results and leave the ambitions aside, just do it! Gump is not stupid at all, he is sort of those men who are being stamped out in our life. |
