Foreword

The cultural traditions of Lingnan and Jiangnan have long been intertwined, through continuous exchanges in the art of seal carving. Beginning in the mid-Qing Dynasty, when Jiangnan scholars Weng Fanggang and Ruan Yuan traveled south to champion epigraphy, to the era when masters like Huang Mufu and Xu Sangeng established their own schools in Lingnan, the seal-carving styles of these two regions have consistently illuminated one another. The modern Lingnan poet and artist Pan Feisheng famously compiled the Collection of Personal Seals, gathering works from masters of both regions—a vivid testament to the deep intellectual fellowships of the time.

In a contemporary continuation of this heritage, this exhibition presents nearly one hundred masterpieces by members of the Xiling Seal Engraver's Society from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Spanning calligraphy, seal carving, and seal scrolls, these works draw upon the refined essence of Jiangnan tradition while embracing the open and vibrant spirit of Lingnan culture. Together, they strike a unique balance between traditional inheritance and bold innovation.

Beyond technical mastery, this exhibition seeks to explore the contemporary significance of seal carving. To this end, a special experimental section titled “Pictorial Seals” (seals that use images rather than characters) has been curated. Centered on the Belt and Road Initiative, this series integrates representative icons and symbols from various countries into the compact space of the seal. These works create a cross-cultural mode of expression that preserves the archaic weight of Qin and Han styles while incorporating modern design concepts. Under the theme “Chinese Seal Carving for the World”, this section initiates a global dialogue through what may be described as the carving of objects and inscription of forms, highlighting Shenzhen's inclusivity and creativity as a global metropolis.

As Shenzhen advances its development within the Greater Bay Area and explores new models of building the Pilot Demonstration Area of Socialism with Chinese characteristics, Shenzhen Art Museum is keenly aware of its cultural responsibility. This exhibition is a concrete manifestation of our academic commitment. It is not merely a showcase of calligraphic and seal-carving achievements, but a profound cultural practice. It reflects the value of “Mutual Learning Among Civilizations”—using the international visual language of pictorial seals to tell the Chinese story; it also addresses “Locality and the Era”—reinvigorating the ancient art of seal carving in China's youngest city; and it contributes to “Urban Construction”—enriching the city's cultural fabric and enhancing public aesthetics to bolster Shenzhen's status as a regional cultural hub and a modern center of national cultural soft power.

Through seal carving and calligraphy, we aim to build a reciprocal and in-depth cultural exchange channel between the Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta. From the poetic elegance of West Lake to the grand vistas of the Lingnan coast, the cultures of the two regions meet here—interacting, converging, learning from one another, and rising to new heights. It is our hope that this exhibition will further enhance cultural communication between Lingnan and Jiangnan within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, inspiring the innovative development of seal carving and contributing to the inheritance and flourishing of China's exceptional traditional culture.
