) H: [0 X7 N2 R/ c3 u+ _- {I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

0 m& X b& e4 Q& e: EI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. # s: v- o6 [( i8 g2 Q u

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. 5 X( J; h- {. t( J: Q

! ?4 ^- J2 e+ @" H6 v) yThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. ; ^ E4 F, S% ], C5 l. R7 J

His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

$ F4 Q# d5 C: V1 FHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes 7 a K9 E# I" ~: ?- O6 W! |

My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.

As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. - ~# a) L9 G" k0 R4 s

F% Z9 h) A; t0 ^3 s- R: R

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

There was a big smile on his face. 0 | ?/ ]) k+ N% l; }; M; J5 Q8 f

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. ) {2 O- o: q! e

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived

/ I4 O/ s6 O) B) j9 j9 {As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. 0 f# m4 ^) v( C! s1 Z

# s% c8 t6 `7 c( n }6 EI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

1 \( n/ i$ k# GWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. 0 t1 n1 \! B4 s* E+ i

( D7 n' O$ v2 V7 v% JHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid. % n0 l. }5 R' o: N
% R/ s% i8 I! g: r( ]6 f5 A2 ^/ z0 d2 ^5 k8 [
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends ! w- P8 Z" j3 G" h6 c6 x u% j: k" a
0 u5 Y6 k( W: ^" b6 J1 e# y( LHe said yes.

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

) l4 p/ T( n3 y0 l; d" H: NMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. , m. l2 D: ?7 _

I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!

"He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

/ m; G1 w: I6 y5 A9 K" n# m* E! yI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.

' R6 f& ~$ @7 F- t/ AHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. 0 X0 @- r: Y3 ]1 b3 l2 \

I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"

& W- z& ^- v" o7 F2 ?/ e$ [He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

"Thanks," he said.

He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.

5 K2 m: K, }1 z' k$ b6 R"Thankfully, I was saved.

My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

* M. [3 V, L! O& t' s- }I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. `6 f, k B# n; }
4 _1 }" a' ^2 ]Not until that moment did I realize its depth. 0 U3 [; `, e, F, v0 O

Never underestimate the power of your actions. : W" w! ~" ^! A8 c9 ~
, x) A) A$ Q+ r9 i& }With one small gesture you can change a person's life.

For better or for worse. ( x% `& d3 O2 D5 S
* s) Q# k. A4 N! EGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
