# T* N, [6 P8 y6 WI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.

His name was Kyle.
4 \, h& F) T' i" S" d5 ?- V# F7 `6 q R! v7 ?* q7 f
& F- j/ u) ^0 I, ~It looked like he was carrying all of his books.

L0 q& ] ^ _- X, J
" Q; s3 f. |: a5 [4 J3 NI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
' |) \! j/ e1 T9 c# a- {2 ?+ r' I w0 k9 u
He must really be a nerd." 9 ^# L# Y! L" i0 [# Y5 ^+ V2 V
# {& Z6 M, `+ i1 r1 J% r8 r
" q5 q4 h# m" E0 I5 XI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. 2 W& e5 M- a% I) A$ L) W
; ?! i1 E( v9 f2 O' @9 j6 ~- c
) J! p: l# f4 a9 a9 T, l6 aAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. * D0 c7 I7 P; N9 l |6 D4 ]

They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. , t0 G" c9 e; h5 Y/ g0 F! [
3 ]5 ~( y" {' ]1 A5 Y- t8 V) v4 a n2 c
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes $ P2 ?; B0 ]' H5 k9 e; ^: k2 k

, j" K- C% t- i, p& o3 e2 k% r
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. " J E6 M) F, S- K, A
; V" D) a) V# _ v/ `) u
# c* Z$ A0 ~0 d; o$ z
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. , ~3 k% x; r |. W. x2 l$ n( Y

They really should get lives
* U Q; ~+ h( K' P/ T7 |* E$ g: y! a0 K1 C7 g
: P8 E! h; |; ?& h s. `2 e7 u" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
$ [! \7 Y& ^6 p. E1 {) \% J
8 ]! ?% c. K( ^5 S9 O0 V
: w8 Q, T/ p& Q6 m9 L8 C& z/ f+ ^5 nThere was a big smile on his face. ' L, J T! S' T9 v. E* _ h- s* N

$ X- u- f' s6 d$ tIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. 3 T2 W& c/ Y$ O

2 U1 k6 C2 {+ o) Q2 R3 }* y1 \: yI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. - h! J3 t. ~+ o
9 t& _9 h' }' E: A# bHe said he had gone to private school before now.

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

' U4 N. V8 R$ r( m* ~+ n8 z% RHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid. % I6 }! _0 T. E, {# y. y) Q

/ p/ j& H& M# ?$ u4 ~I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends ( I! H7 e6 P( q* g: ~7 K

He said yes. 8 H4 t! _! m" Y# j0 |

, [# x) Q# e) Z$ UWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
+ O' c# B% A g; j2 H0 X& ?" w1 F( H) v( P
3 f {2 g3 y5 g) t. aMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
- f O+ {5 V! _& ^. B2 l( H- B/ x7 E A u& U1 F3 ^2 p" i# L. H
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!

"He just laughed and handed me half the books.
; H8 B* J1 H! r4 l( q
( i4 k( p7 i" K# K7 c. Q( L7 Z# w6 b% p' i* |9 C n* Q3 _
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

$ `, G+ B. F+ l0 n" @When we were seniors, we began to think about college.

was going to Duke.

I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. 5 R7 Y; A( C# m( o! |; E% c# r, t

He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. ' ^8 {( Z% k/ \$ o; n

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.

w6 Y5 P, I! rI teased him all the time about being a nerd.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.

He looked great.

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.

He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" " S' V% ~0 j4 d9 Y/ P

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began ; ~0 v) [, k. }) O* k+ V" v* l; J

"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. , z4 J, w! C- e1 O8 z$ I3 u

Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.

He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. ) P& z7 S' [1 i2 X4 ]0 e2 H

He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

2 e* Y/ q# C O& M2 E8 B( R, ]
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
& Z8 E1 F& a+ m# H. N6 A" w2 B
: C) U4 q# a+ K/ I"Thankfully, I was saved.

5 Z A$ o: f6 {* S/ h+ |8 LMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable." 7 x4 g6 e8 t) n2 v1 P0 r

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
# `% b1 T9 q, N1 H+ ?, ?4 b l/ h4 D
. l* c3 z: E4 [9 l5 r4 ^I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. . i7 ^+ z% w( `) q/ e
2 L/ ^: X& k. x- r7 S0 r3 A# J' h0 Z
Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions.

With one small gesture you can change a person's life. 3 {% i+ l- m* x+ o' k+ T$ R

God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
