, X! e; S5 ]% H" X0 WI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.

His name was Kyle.

It looked like he was carrying all of his books. - o9 L T: K$ @( `$ e8 ?! L

3 T3 D( C1 t; ]! O6 Q7 e0 iI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

7 L/ b' J$ X/ ZHe must really be a nerd." + v4 p% h, M* _; b
& F4 q z) |+ u! n9 Z; X# `4 e7 I, U& [; K( U# T6 J
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. 8 T+ l T" D6 L, v2 @7 v

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
/ T* n1 s( e: Q0 B8 }/ }
5 a9 C4 ?* @ h4 O- |3 q& A U1 F4 R/ G8 C# y
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
5 ]- ]! Z. z1 G+ g& Z; v9 K- K0 x3 {/ V4 t
6 c/ b# ^2 W2 q7 Z$ _His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. . R7 b) E) ~( G* v. {' h

8 T0 R# s. c1 @2 DHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes # E8 H8 h! e" C& U/ n
" B7 m$ d& C9 ~$ f" J7 U( F
5 T5 t' g( X% f$ MMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.

) U- i5 F. e3 d ^& ^! V/ A/ LAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. 6 v8 X9 f; b+ J
' t2 R) ^/ D+ }! U( U) V( k$ d" q# ?
They really should get lives 3 u$ Z {! @: r

2 Q" \* ]& Y, H! U0 ?" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

: J- ?$ g8 I& l6 C7 w+ tThere was a big smile on his face.

) |& a0 \4 h) P5 X; `" m. [It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived , e4 K- K- m/ Z# \1 y3 x4 f! q

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

He said he had gone to private school before now. % c% @) h$ e, h" N# v; ~! F1 o. v V4 n

I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

! _' R4 [/ R* g% I* @7 eWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. ' O. }0 P" i! W+ A. J3 c

4 H/ ~8 S6 u( q# l' K2 GHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid. - J9 x7 n* K6 r% y; p0 Z

0 q' u! w. T7 K8 LI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends 1 b( {) m4 L4 N) ?
& x0 V1 _( c9 EHe said yes. ( N5 K* I" N& Z6 U

7 H0 h7 Y* E }4 A. l5 e+ GWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him. ; y5 l' K9 T; F; a7 u2 t

1 m+ |3 O2 R( ~7 {5 J% n& AMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. % }; _' f- |' o
. j/ G1 w* M2 H& t5 P4 f1 \/ u( b$ r2 GI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday! " Q) `" q7 \4 K5 z' n9 J, X

) ^. T, W; `$ ]/ _+ }* `"He just laughed and handed me half the books.

8 ^5 `8 j0 q- }7 v$ n7 L( fOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

7 A6 | M1 ~2 v+ l3 ~( V; hWhen we were seniors, we began to think about college.

was going to Duke.

6 h b1 I5 p3 {. ^I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.

2 T- }! g' {' A, [He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" 7 X; R4 p6 n7 e' u o" g

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began # h) Z+ Z* m+ p$ H) o$ N

He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.

My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

9 [. G7 T( u1 y* T( ~+ y' h9 BI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. 6 p2 P5 r; z; D6 V9 k3 {3 v- W

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. . M8 ^" N" \8 z! G. S0 N

Not until that moment did I realize its depth. % m6 b9 `% |6 U& g. V. ~5 N

Never underestimate the power of your actions.

With one small gesture you can change a person's life. " U8 }! @) x( I, _- x
