It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—; W$ w+ Y+ R0 D, Z! R m+ ~
This debt we pay to human guile;
/ _1 Q8 n7 E: y( _' N4 ~' ?* ]0 wWith torn and bleeding hearts we smile,1 q* t. h8 Z: w% X* v0 ^2 y$ T
And mouth with myriad subtleties.
$ f- L3 H1 W1 Q+ e! [+ E: j" I) U
" {6 R# G; t9 |. Y% C PWhy should the world be over-wise," A9 j: f5 ]" F4 J
In counting all our tears and sighs?
. h6 k3 @, m$ u5 ^- gNay, let them only see us, while
+ ~8 l5 N5 H& T, ]4 z: `$ y We wear the mask.; w: ^, `, z6 g. c' c7 J3 z' L7 O
' ^" z% F% n! W1 X/ r9 z! J
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries# `' ?$ Z& t0 _ `: }8 ]
To thee from tortured souls arise./ f3 A* p* ^7 y4 E _! i9 u
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
